“The main reason why industrial products are destroyed is their insufficient fatigue strength, that is, the material deforms over time under the influence of loads. To improve their characteristics, methods of chemical thermal and mechanothermal treatment are used, but this process is long, expensive and not always effective. Our development is based on another method, namely rolling the surface with a ball or a roller that is pressed into the surface of the part with a certain force”, says the author of the development, Alexey Shiryaev, graduate student of the Department of Machine Dynamics and Strength of Perm Polytech University.

According to the researchers, this method will significantly improve the surface quality of industrial products. Scientists have created a prototype of the device and successfully tested it in experimental conditions. The developers conducted the tests at the High-Tech Engineering Center on a tool manufactured at Perm Polytech University, as well as its foreign counterpart, the hydrostatic device HG6-9_-SL(K). The experiment showed that the mechanical characteristics of the surface layer of the samples in both cases were increased by 25 to 33 percent. At the same time, the cost of domestic development is 2 times lower than its foreign counterpart.

“An important advantage of our development is a more favorable cost of manufacturing and operation of tools and replaceable elements. The average price of foreign equipment is 1 million rubles. At the same time, the tool after 8-10 hours of operation requires a complete replacement of the rolling element, unlike our device. This ensures the competitiveness of the development in the world market of mechanical engineering”, explains the young scientist.

According to the researchers, the selection of optimal modes of hardening of parts takes place experimentally now. This increases the cost of the finished product. In the near future, scientists are planning to develop an automatic lubrication system, special equipment and software. It will allow processing complex surfaces on various types of machines, including those with numerical control. The researchers are also creating a database that will allow one to choose the processing mode of parts from different metals and alloys and optimize it.
