International Congress will be held on April 17-18, 2014 in Bauman Moscow State Technical University (BMSTU). It is dedicated to the 160th anniversary of Vladimir Grigoryevich Shukhov – an outstanding Russian engineer, graduate of BMSTU (Imperial Moscow Technical School at the time) and the most sought after Russian engineer in the late XIX - early XX century. Engineering challenges solved by him include exhibition halls and pavilions, shop floors, grain elevators, blast furnaces, floating gate dry docks, railway bridges, oil extraction equipment, rotating theatre stages and many more.
The purpose of the Congress is the integration of the international scientific, academic and engineering communities, the development of cross-disciplinary research, development on this basis of multidisciplinary international research groups and the search for new trends in science, engineering and technical education in the modern world.
The following topics are offered for discussion:
1. V.G. Shukhov in the history of engineering and architecture;
2. Engineering creations of V.G. Shukhov through the prism of the modern age;
3. Architecture under the sign of V.G. Shukhov: from modernism to neomodernism;
4. The problem of protection of cultural heritage of V.G. Shukhov;
5. Technical education and professional culture of the engineer: global trends;
6. Dynamics of the standard of engineering elite and the status of the engineer in the modern world;
7. Social and cultural meanings, values and norms of engineering;
8. Engineering and technical rationality in the system of modern scientific knowledge;
9. Applied ethics and professional responsibility;
10. Historical path and the current state of engineering;
11. Science and technology of the future.
The Organizing Committee is accepting applications for participation in the Congress before April 1st, 2014. The applicants are to indicate which discussions they would like to take part in. Materials of the Congress are to be published in the electronic peer-reviewed journal "Humanitarian Gazette of BMSTU". The organizing committee reserves the right to select the materials for publication.
In preparation for the Congress a competition for innovative social engineering projects as well as projects in areas of engineering and architecture is to be held for undergraduate and graduate students.
The organizing committee is open to discuss ideas, proposals, projects, and sponsorship.
